Malou and Yves:
In the past few weeks we have completed the acquisition of Strive Health and Fitness. We know the place well, having been members since the turn of the century. Unfortunately, our past occupation kept us traveling and we could only train here a couple of weekends a month, which explains why we had never met many of you.
Why did we buy this gym?
We are neighbors. We have lived three blocks away since the '90s and we like the liveliness and diversity of the area, the watchful discretion (sounds funny, but we cannot describe it any other way) of its people.
Mostly though, it is the spirit of the gym that motivated us to acquire it. Over time, its members and training staff have given it a very special culture that is not found in other health clubs: workout without fanaticism, diversity of individual goals, seriousness in efforts without obsession, and the polite consideration of each toward the other.
It is not a health club with social gravitas, it is a friendly working gym.
The future
We believe that membership fees should not only buy space and time in a gym that remains static. Part of it should go toward improvements so that the gym remains at least as attractive a year later as it was when you first signed on.
We want to make this gym evolve, but without changing its character. We will improve the facilities, the equipment and the infrastructure. We will provide a cleaner environment, more easily maintained; we will upgrade the equipment and the video/audio kit to minimize breakdowns, and ensure better control of the air-conditioning and heat.
Strive
We liked the name when it replaced Dolphin, a few years ago. It represents what many of us do in a gym, the endeavor to improve oneself, within one's own capabilities, so we decided (with the approval of the previous owner) to keep it with a slight modification: Strive NYC.
For the logo however, we preferred the uplifting image of a soaring hawk to the crunched figure of a misshaped alien. Why get crunched when you can strive to soar?
We hope you will stay with us and be joined by a few of your friends over the coming years. See you on the floor!
Evolution in motion - Changes at Strive NYC

Floor
The mat of the stretch area was replaced with an oak floor that adds some light to the room, and individual mats were brought for stretching exercises.
Oak floor replaced the plastic tiles under the cardio arena on the ground level. The plastic tiles will be replaced in the free weight zone to complete the floor upgrade.
Equipment
New treadmills and elliptical cross-trainers are on order to replace all the current ones on the ground and the second floor.
Two LeMond spin bikes have been added on the ground floor.

All video and audio equipment are also being replaced in the coming weeks, with better sound control throughout the gym, better links to the cardio machines and more varied program channels for music.
Security cameras will be installed on all the floors and monitored from the front desk. There will be no camera in the locker rooms.
Entrance
The front door will be replaced to provide for better insulation during summer and winter.
On-going Projects
The following work is in the planning stage.
- Reorganization of the free weight area on the ground floor.
- Installation of parquet and new tiles on the second floor.
- Replacement of the reception counter.
- Repainting of the walls and replacement of broken mirrors.
Although this work is bound to create some level of disruption, work will be done at night when possible so as to minimize the inconvenience to our guests.
